I’ve spent years teaching people how to ethically influence others.
How to lead with power and principle.
How to make decisions that are rooted in trust, integrity, and mutual respect.
So when someone ran my proprietary content through an AI detector and then dismissed me as if I were dishonest…I wasn’t just surprised.
I was stunned.
Because what was really happening wasn’t about technology at all.
It was about power—and the way it gets misused when we abandon ethics for convenience.
When AI Becomes the Gatekeeper
Let me take you inside the moment.
I submitted my own work, something I had written, taught, copyrighted, and even published in my bestselling book. It was mine. Word for word.
But because that content already exists online, on my blog, in interviews, in excerpts from my book, the AI detector flagged it as “AI-generated.” A false positive.
I explained. I documented. I clarified.
But it didn’t matter.
The person on the other side refused to believe me. They chose the machine over the human. They dismissed me as if I had no value at all.
And that’s where we hit the ethical wall.
AI Tools Are Not the Problem. Human Behavior Is.
Let me be clear, I’m not anti-AI. I use it. I train others to use it ethically.
But I also know that tools don’t make decisions. People do.
The moment we outsource our critical thinking and stop evaluating context, nuance, or character, we’ve lost the very foundation of ethical influence.
And we’ve stepped into something far more dangerous: We’ve given up our power to choose how we treat each other.

3 Influence Principles People Forget in the Age of AI
Let’s use this moment to learn. Because whether you’re in leadership, fundraising, sales, or daily life, how you influence matters more than ever.
1. Authority Needs Integrity Behind It
People trusted the AI tool because it sounded authoritative. But false authority can be misleading when it’s not backed by discernment.
This is why ethical authority requires credibility and curiosity. Ask questions. Consider context. Authority without empathy becomes tyranny.
2. Liking Still Matters – Even Online
The Principle of Liking isn’t about being agreeable. It’s about connection. When we know someone, trust their character, or find shared humanity, we’re more likely to believe them.
AI detection removes that human layer. So as leaders, it’s our responsibility to reintroduce it.
3. Consistency is About Values, Not Just Process
It’s tempting to say, “This is just our process, we run all content through a detector.” But ethical consistency means standing by your values even when systems throw curveballs. If your value is respect, then your response should reflect it, even when the algorithm flags something.
Power Without Perspective Is Dangerous
In my book Power Up / Power Down, I teach that how we use our power defines the outcomes we create.
The person who dismissed me used their power to silence, not support.
To judge, not inquire.
To diminish, not understand.
It was a textbook case of Power Down behavior masked as “protocol.”
When we allow tools to become gatekeepers without challenge, we risk treating people as problems to be managed rather than individuals to be understood.
Don’t Let the Tools Replace the Trust
You don’t need to be an AI expert to be an ethical influencer.
But you do need to be a person who pauses before judging.
Who uses discernment before dismissal.
Who leads with both head and heart.
That’s what I teach in my Ethical Influence course, how to ethically persuade, lead, and communicate in a world full of noise and automation.
Because at the end of the day…
AI can generate content.
But it can’t generate character.
That’s still up to us.
